a post a day for seven days: today is day 1

I need something to challenge me. So I’m challenging myself.

Seven posts in seven days.

In the beginning days of Urban Casita I posted this much regularly. I even wrote out a schedule for my little blog: Mondays about memories, Tuesdays about thrift finds, Wednesdays a free day, etc. etc. Somewhere along the way my naivete about blogging disappeared and I began posting sporadically. I looked at content other people were putting out and became unsure of myself. ReadyMade, which was the one place where I had to produce a certain amount of work and for whom I had to push myself at times, folded and I went into a slump. I decided my words were boring, my photos crappy, my ideas and projects overdone. Nothing was new. Everything I wanted to write about had been written about somewhere else. I guess this is the problem with the internet. Nothing ever feels new, until it is, and then it isn’t anymore because it’s all over the place. Follow? I didn’t think so. I’m not sure I do.

Anyways, I’m over that. I’m going to post about what I want to post about because it makes me happy to do so. I find that the blogs and sites I love the most do just that. See you tomorrow?

  1. You go, girl!! I enjoy your blog and all of the peeks you give us into the life around you. Simply said and simply lovely.

  2. See? The reason I read your blog is that it’s different than the others I follow and, big plus, you live in Chicago as I do. When I’m in Logan Square, I look around for your cute face! Don’t be too hard on yourself. You have a unique artistic eye and mellow world view.

  3. Hi. As someone who gets bored/impatient with a great number of blogs out there, I have to say that I like yours a lot and miss your posts – you have a great mix of reality and style that makes your blog very readable. Post more!

  4. Yeah Meg! I love all your posts and you gotta be kidding me, your pics are the best! Keep it up!

  5. Here here! I agree with the whole internet ‘nothing is new’ feeling. I get into that slump a lot myself. But then I realize that ‘the internet’ is such a HUGE thing, and someone new will always be discovering your blog or photo or idea. There is always someone to reach I s’pose!

I’m on the same page though: I like blogs that are more spontaneous! Go for it!

  6. I’ve resisted starting a blog because I thought it had to have a central theme in order to be successful. Like you, I want to write about anything and everything — not just about cooking or books or fun things I see. All of it! Your blog is great, and it’s inspiring to see you toss a “model” and let your thoughts fly. Looking forward to reading more.

  7. Thank you all so much for the kind words. They are very encouraging. Lynn, I hope you start that site! And Moriah, you know I love your midwest.

  8. nice to hear your smiling voice on any subject

  9. I love reading your blog. It’s sort of like having a friend with common interests who I can visit with when I don’t feel like being around actual people or can’t seem to find actual people I want to be around.

  10. oh, and it’s super pretty just to look at.

  11. Sorry I’m late to the party. I love your blog; I discovered you on ReadyMade, and continue to follow Urban Casita now that it is no more. I got to live in Chicago for about eight months in 2001 (I left as the first snowflakes fell, soon after 9/11.) I still miss it and dream of going back for another summer someday. Your words and photos really bring back the flavor of the city.

I have felt that urge to write something every day, as well as the disappointment of trying unsuccessfully to always come up with something new and interesting. My own site needs a re-design so badly right now that I’ve left it unattended for a long time (someday I’ll learn how to use WordPress and then maybe it will look like me again.) But please believe that your words are never boring – and your photos are AMAZING!

Sorry you’ve been in a slump lately, but it’ll go away. And a lot of us will still be reading. Looking forward to seeing where you go from here!
