rest in peace, readymade

As many of you may have heard, ReadyMade Magazine is no more. I wrote this long, gut-wrenching entry last week about how sad I was, how I stupidly f*cked up my last post for the website due to a saving error, and how incredibly fulfilling and awesome it was to be a part of that community, but I’m not publishing it. I think brevity will suit me better in this instance.

Three million cheers for ReadyMade. I’m pouring a little beer out as I type.

Go and save your favorite posts/projects/articles now. You can do so by opening up the page you like and pressing Control + S. Or download CutePDF and save them that way. The site has a massive amount of content and Andrew Wagner, the amazing EIC who first noticed this blog back in 2009 and later invited me to write for it in the beginning of 2010, reports that the site “will not be supported.” What that means, I am not sure. I don’t know where websites go once they’re ‘gone.’ To be safe, save the stuff you love now. The site is filled to the brim. Take awhile to go through it.

I know a lot of the people who read this site on a regular basis found me through ReadyMade. Thanks for reading my posts and expect more of the same content here. I will greatly miss checking out the site each day, stalking the Facebook page, and writing fun posts for one of the best magazines to have ever done it. Rest in peace, friend.

Also, if you want to hire me, shoot me an email. I swear I’m a decent writer.

the front room, rearranged

Hello, empty room and prancing dog! Moldings and baseboards are done! Rejoice in painters doing the work instead of us! Yay!

Now that that’s out of the way: with the front room (which acts as a foyer, library and office) empty we got to play around with where stuff went when we put it back.

Check out the little hanging planter in the last photo.  You can make your own in no time– check out my write-up of the easy little project at ReadyMade.

I’d venture to say that most folks who’ve seen photos of or who have even been in our apartment won’t notice the subtle changes. Being obsessive about my living space in a way that is probably not healthy means that I know exactly what’s new, moved, or omitted altogether. The front room isn’t exactly where I want it to be– a little too cluttered, to be honest– but there’s always room for more (and more and more) arranging in this household.

making stuff: bracelets

I was so busy making bracelets that I didn’t get many photos! Read all about our gals-only friendship bracelet making day at ReadyMade. I gotta go finish mine. Excuse me.

painting, spray painting and updating the bathroom

Before

bathroom re-do
After

Ouch! I’m still achy all over: painting is NO JOKE. Head on over to ReadyMade to read the full post on my brand new bathroom! The before photo used here is a little misleading– this is the paint color two cycles ago. Yes, I have painted this room a grand total of three– four if you include the primer that sat on the wall for months– times. I’m insane. The good part is that the new color is here to stay.   The pain was worth it.

gotta get away: st thomas recap

For the last few years the Mister and I have made a habit of jetting down to St. Thomas every January to get in a few days of sunshiney relaxation and to celebrate the New Year. While we love traveling to new places, St. Thomas is an easy, no-brainer destination for us; I used to live there and it’s where we got married. We stay in the same condo every year, know the island well, have our favorite grocery stores, restaurants and of course, beaches. Plus, I’m totally a pro at driving on the left. All we have to do is jump off of a plane and into a rental car (a new Toyota Rav-4 in this instance– super fun to maneuver up hills and on sand) and make a quick stop at the market before heading “home.” No maps, no guesswork, no worries.

The weather was a little cooler than I remember it ever being but we still made plenty of time for swimming and lounging in the sun. On two mornings we got up early and drove into Charlotte-Amalie, or “town” as it’s more commonly known, and shot some photos. The Mister got to test drive his Diana camera. We pick up the prints tomorrow and I’m giddy with anticipation. For now you’ll have to be content with my digitals.

We also made a super tourist stop at a gorgeous overlook above town.

We spent an afternoon at one of the three pools on the property. They’re almost always empty and, though I’m much more of a beach girl, great for relaxing with a cold beer.

When it came time to go home I was sad. I always miss living on island and we’ve both discussed moving back down for a few years. But then our plane lands and we start our drive into the city from O’Hare and the Chicago skyline comes into view and all of that melts away until instances like now, when I’m face to face with pictorial evidence of how beautiful and fun and warm and perfectly livable St. Thomas is. So let me stop looking at these pics and just hit post and walk my dog outside in twenty-degree weather and try to be OK with that.

our graceful cohabiters

cohabiting with grace

Remember Kate and Evan, my pals who were making the move-in-together-jump and trying to do so gracefully? I am happy to report that their home is nearly finished and I posted about some updates at ReadyMade this morning. Try not to be jealous when you see all of their ingenious reupurposes and upcycles (HELLO, IKEA Expedit on the wall?! Best kitchen cabinet idea ever).

Kate and Evan gracefully worked together to make a comfortable and stylish home worthy of lots of Megan-envy– give it a look here.

the landing strip, revisited

Time freaking flies. Almost a year ago, I wrote about my “landing strip,” the area just inside our doorway that must contain all of our daily necessities: keys, dog leash, mail, sunglasses, iPhone earbuds (perfect for walking the dog and calling my Auntie Gail), doggie waste bags, ya get the picture. It’s a lot of stuff to keep organized. With winter coming and adding scarves and hats and mittens to the mix, my former set-up would have been disastrous. Plus… it looks horrible to me! Isn’t it funny how quickly your tastes change?

I got rid of the hanging file, moved my alley find desk into the bedroom for a much-needed high side table and took the coat rack off of the wall, spray painted it light blue and moved it to the back of the door. The mirror was also moved to the bedroom and the bulletin boards completely dismantled, their contents safe inside a box of keepsakes.

my urban casita
Here is the summertime “after”, complete with my favorite blue fan and $5 lamp atop the credenza I got from my first estate sale. Note the hole made from trying to use a butterfly screw in plaster and lathe walls. Bad idea. My little bull head came from The Economy Shop in Oak Park and the white bowl was another thrift find, probably around $3. We screwed some hooks into the wall to hold the dog leash and our keys.

iPhoneography

And here is the fall “after”: the fan has been put away and a stack of books–my favorite easy color addition, more on books overtaking my life later this week– with a jade plant from the back porch in its place. The wide drawers of the credenza hold all of our fall and winter stuff, which I’m sure I’ll need later this week even though it’s 70 degrees as I type. Chicago weather, I swear. The little string of photos covering the hole are newly printed iPhone pictures.

You can read all about my experience with printing app-modified photos and see some of my favorite apps to do your own here on a post just up today at ReadyMade.

I just showed the mister the before photo and cringed. He laughed and said that in a year I’d be showing him a picture of some other room of our apartment and saying the same thing, no matter how much I love it now. He’s probably right.  Either way:  that before photo is horrid and I’m much happier with the new look.

My total price on the ugly landing strip according to the post I wrote in November of 2009 was $38.79.  Let’s see how that compares now.

Credenza: $60
Bull head: $8
White bowl: $3
Silver tray: belonged to my grandmother-in-law
Plant in thrifted vessel: $5
Books: priceless
iPhone art: $5
Total: $81

A little more than twice the price. Oh well. It looks about a trillion times better and still comes in at a very decent price point.

Go ahead. Make fun of the before pic. I’ll join you!

craigslisting tips from katherine and libby

kitchen
Chairs, six for $50 from Craigslist

I haven’t met the awesome duo behind The Vintage Bazaar in person– I have been out of town on both of their big sales, sadly– but I had a great time emailing with Libby and Katherine to prepare a Q&A on Craigslisting up today at ReadyMade.

While putting the post together last night I started thinking about some of my really good Craigslist purchases. Most of the big pieces in my home have come from the site but I haven’t used it in months. That’s gonna change. I really need a new TV stand and hope I can find the perfect one for me this week.

Off to stalk CL now. Check out Libby and Katherine’s tips here.

What a fun weekend! As you know, Gram’s house was our Sunday excursion and on Saturday, Aziza, Tanisha and I went to the first ever Design Harvest Street Fest over on Grand Ave. You can read my little wrap-up at ReadyMade. Here are some photos I loved that didn’t make the cut over there.

I posted about my kitchen over at ReadyMade yesterday. There’s even a before photo. Read, read, read! Do check out some of the other fantastic pieces penned this week. I especially loved this one on how to make sure you’re not wasting food.

Hope you’re having a fantastic week and getting prepped for the weekend!
