house envy

kathmo

I’m getting pretty active on Flickr these days (my stream). Here are some homes I have been stalking along the way, all thanks to the huge amount of groups I have joined. Flickr is an endless source of inspiration for me and, to be honest, a bit of hateration. The same way I hate window shopping with no money in my pocket is the way I hate looking at some of these stupidly beautiful homes and not being able to live in them myself. In trying to get over it I’m posting photos for you to drool over, and hate on if you wish, too.

We have the knockoff Ikea version of this round table and similarly shaped chairs. And how great is that patio?

Smile and Wave

I always thought the clipboard as inspiration/organizer wall was kind of funny looking but this one looks very polished.  The paper plane garland is a really fun touch, too.

Gorgeous wooden table?  Check.  Cute mismatched chairs?  Check.  Unique light fixture?  Check.  Sideboard sized perfectly for an apartment?  Check.  Megan hating?  Why of course.

And who wouldn’t want a map covered dress form?

Happy Hating!

let’s paint some floors

Note: Since this post, I did paint my floors!

Hello turquoise! I mean, it’s already on my kitchen walls, so why not add some to the black floors in the RWTGTD?

If you read this blog often, you know all about the Room Where Things Go To Die. It is a teesny, shoebox-sized room that needs to fulfill many purposes: guest quarters, craft storage, reading room. It is slowly coming along and the one thing that really keeps me from being able to go all out and beautify the damn thing is the floors. The wooden floors. That are painted black. With gray paint streaks and spots decorating them. Fun, huh?

This comprehensive tutorial at Door Sixteen is really making me want to take the plunge to pretty painted floors. Sure, it might be a difficult and time consuming and I may hate myself while I’m painting but the end result is totally worth it.

Now: what color? Keep in mind that the room gets little natural light and is painted a light gray. Oh, and we have a black lab mutt who sheds. A lot.

I could go all out and do some crazy stenciling… but realistically, that’s not in my repertoire, right?

via AT

On second thought, this is so gorgeous that maybe it should be in my repertoire. Can you imagine turquoise with a white pattern? Or better, orange? ORANGE.

via On Bradstreet

Gray… how beautiful is this room? How perfect? From the bench in the left-hand corner to the light rug under the table, color me in love. And the floors look pretty damn good, too. (Please go read the post this photo is from here. A beautiful day making home feel like home is described by the author.)

I’m in. Painted floors, I’m ready for you. Who wants to help?

like a kid in a candy store…

I’m still shocked no one told me about Catalyst Ranch. Shocked. How could everyone keep this huge secret from me?

Granted, I haven’t been in the market for an event space, which is what Catalyst Ranch is, but someone should have made me aware of the decor and furniture and all-around loveliness that exists inside two floors of a pretty nondescript office building on Randolph St. in the South Loop. I was there yesterday for the Foodie Registry launch party (if you’re engaged and already have a Cuisinart, register for Chicago restaurants on their website) representing mk The Restaurant aka The Best Restaurant in Chicago aka where I work.

I stepped off of the crickety service elevator with rhubarb tarts and ricotta cheesecake in tow and my jaw dropped. Huge rooms filled with bright, colorful, gorgeous, inspiring, Heavenly… okay, you get my drift. Even the women’s bathroom was a sight. Vintage clothing hung on hooks above the commodes, framed photos covered the walls. Truly a one-of-a-kind event space.

This is the view Kate B. and I had from our service table. Imagine trying to smile and engage prospective clients of the restaurant with so much eye candy right in front of me! Luckily I believe in the products I was pushing or it would have been disastrous.

Then again, how could I not believe in these delicious morsels of rhubarby goodness? Everyone loved our desserts and I think I ate about half a tray. Happy Sunday to me.

If I was still engaged and had attended this event it would have killed two birds with one stone. Restaurants to register for, check. Reception venue, check. Gosh, how easy it is to put together a wedding in your mind when you’re three years removed from the stress it took to plan the real thing.

Anyway, if you’re in the market for an event space and you read this blog, then you can pretty much check that to-do off of your list. You’ve found your venue.

my first estate sale

More + the story of my first estate sale soon come! I just couldn’t hold off on posting these photos any longer…

recreating in cape town

I came across Recreate, an online shop based in Cape Town, while doing more research on those beloved suitcases sitting in my front room and posted about artist Katie Thompson’s suitcase chairs over at ReadyMade today.  Now, I’m browsing through some of her other pieces.

How cool are these cookie vases?

Katie says, “Yesterday’s baked batch… Today’s fresh field. This baking tray was left out in the rain… it would never bake again… framed in a Perspex box, it is now the Cookie-Vase…”

Check out more of her reuses here.

P.S.  She ships worldwide!

diy headboards & my ugly bedroom

Note: The bedroom has been updated since this post! Check it out here.
My embarrassing little bedroom. Yes, that is primer on the wall.

I know, I know. I said it was back porch project weekend but I don’t think the weather is going to cooperate. If it doesn’t, I need to have a backup.

So, I’ve mentioned that our apartment is… ahem… vintage. It hasn’t been updated in decades (I think) and a lot of the rooms sorely need TLC. Take our bedroom for instance. The once-wooden floor, which I assume was beautiful, was at some point painted a dusty brown. A brown wooden floor. As you can see from the pitiful photo above, that brown has endured scratches, paint splatters, dust, dog hair; it’s a f^&#$(g mess. But I don’t have to cojones for that project quite yet.

I was going to settle for painting the room. I primed it way back when we first moved in —
Note to former tenants: midnight blue in an already cave-like room? What were you thinking? Also, I am sorry for constantly shitting on your home. You left it filthy, poorly-maintained and there were mounds of dog poo in the backyard. I am still bitter.
—but haven’t actually added, ya know, paint. But painting the room involves asking hubby dearest to move the bed to the craft room and sleeping in there and all that jazz. It’s March Madness. I’m not messing with that.

I have decided to settle on creating a headboard. A cheap one. One that doesn’t involve paint.

This room is soooo not my style but I am definitely digging the window panel headboard. And wouldn’t you know, there has been a wooden frame in the alley for three days (Diana, I failed, I should have grabbed it immediately) and I swore I was going to come home and go pick it up while I walked the dog. I hope it is still there tomorrow.

The suggestion here is to mount vintage hankies onto canvas. I’m not sure that would work in real life. I feel like my head would constantly dislodge everything. Either way, it’s cute but probably not for me. Plus, painting a frame around each one is involved. I said no painting.

Okay, this is adorable. The little girl, the granny squares, all of it. But I am 27. Darn it.

If I could get away with this… I just don’t know how you pull it off. First, I’m not that fashionable and I don’t think I have anything cute enough to hang. Second, it would get dusty and that would annoy me. Does it get vacuumed? What if you move your pillow and the thing falls on you while you sleep? It’s cute but probably not for moi.

Okay, love. Love, love, love, love, love! Since our bedroom is the size of a shoebox, the bed is, like the bed in the photo, shoved up against the wall. This DIY headboard makes that an asset, not a design mess. I am sold. But how do I do it? Two big wooden panels? Cover them with batting and fabric? Is that it? Eureka! Let’s see if I can pull this off. I know I said this weekend, but give me… um… two months. Just in case something comes up…

Actually, wait. Some more internet sleuthing led to this awesome tutorial on how to make a fabric headboard from Young House Love. Wooden panels aren’t involved. I can just use an artist’s frame for stretching canvas. Thank you internet!

Do you have any ideas for DIY headboards? I would love to hear them.

And I apologize for subjecting you to that horrible photo of my bedroom. Wish me luck on transforming it.

out to the porch we go!

While it is still hovering below fifty degrees here in Chicago, there’s no reason not to drool over some photos in anticipation of spring finally hitting us in the Midwest.  Let’s peruse some porches, shall we?

Yes, this is outside! The vintage signage, the chairs, the little blue stool. In love.

Hanging candles in a vintage vessel.  Super pretty and romantic.

Sweet table + blue chair. This area of Flickr user RedOrangePink’s apartment garden makes me feel right at home. See more here.

My day job is at a fancy schmancy restaurant and we go through tons of wine crates.  Would be neat to spray paint and use as porch storage.

The star light is so cute! And yellow always brightens up my day.

Now please excuse me as I go shiver myself off to work. Let’s go, Spring. Haul your ass to Chicago so I can decorate my porch.

spring is on the way…

This is how I want the light to stream in each weekday morning. Images by Leslie Thomson over at Etsy are making me feel spring-timey. Maybe they’ll give an added bonus– inspiration for spring cleaning, perhaps?

look! vintagey suitcases on the wall

I’ve been bumbling around the interwebs tonight, trying to find the perfect way to display two amazing suitcases I found at Salvation Army a few months ago. They’re currently acting as dog-steps so my pup can gaze (bark) out the window but I’m a little tired of the placement. Above is an inspiring photo via everyone’s favorite megablog.

And here are my own. Not the best photo, but you get the idea. What would you suggest I do with these babies?

And oh, yes… the price? $24 for both. I love thrifting.
