positive friday

Hello from Toronto! I’m posting from my iPhone so please excuse any weird formatting and typos! I’m going to try to attach a photo of the view from where I type: The Drake Hotel’s rooftop lounge, Sky Yard.

The Mister and I spent the morning on a long walk around the neighborhood and are now enjoying vodka tonics and Bloody Marys. This area is heaven for the design geek and I’ve already spent $1.53 on a Corning creamer and sugar set at the local Salvation Army. There are at least ten vintage shops in a six block radius and the hotel has one of its own, too! At least that what it looked like when I peeked in their General Store…

While on the walk, we discovered that there is a Cuban festival in the neighborhood this weekend and I’m so excited to put on my dancing shoes this evening! I hope everyone has an amazing weekend and if you’re in Chicago, make sure to hit up The Vintage Bazaar. Check out twitter.com/vintagebizaar for deets. I can’t figure out how to link from this app.

Have a positive Friday!

kate's house

Q: What’s better than an end-of-week summer barbecue?
A: An end-of-week summer barbecue with your closest friends, all of whom happen to be foodies that can cook. Some even for a living. Bless my day job.

The Mister and I headed over to Kate B’s house (you saw her amazing chair re-do, right?) last night for some delicious gastronomical delights, including Mexican elotes and piri piri marinated chicken. I made Alice Waters’ lentil salad with black lentils purchased from the Dill Pickle Co-op. It was too dark to tell if everyone ate my dish but the Mister said it was pretty damned good.

I love Kate’s house and her backyard is no exception. Most Chicago apartments come with standard wooden back porches similar to my own but Kate has a much larger patio right outside her door and she’s started fixing it up with wine crates and tea lights. Super simple and super cheap.

Since we stayed up so late it’s time for a simple Friday night at home. Have a great weekend!

plate love + positive friday

Happy Happy Friday! How great to have made it to the end of another work week.

I wrote about plate walls today for ReadyMade and, while browsing the internets for photos to go with the post, came across this lovely shot via Design Shrine. How much do you love? Head on over to the comments at Inside, Out and tell me if you think plate walls are awesome or awful. We all know my opinion: ♥.

What are your weekend plans? I think I’d like to add on to my own plate walls, especially the one outside. Also on the agenda: spray painting, thrifting, resting, movie watching, hip-hop listening, dancing, going to market and maybe, just maybe tackling that sod job. Heatwave be damned, I’ll just drink a lot of water!

Best weekend wishes to all!

positive friday

Happy, happy Friday to you and you and you.

I’m on the back porch right now, watching my pup chew sticks while sprawled out in our overgrown backyard. His right ear has flopped to the wrong side and it is driving my crazy.

My father is the subject of the photo above, which was taken last week on the day before his 65th birthday. We will be gathering tomorrow to celebrate it in true fashion with Wisconsin brats on the grill and custard from Bella’s Fat Cat.

Here is a poem from Papo, as I call him, two months after Sweet Water Organics began construction.

I Want To Be a City Fish Farmer

I’ll feel safer for our bodies’ futures
If fish are farmed in our ‘hoods.

Our children and our elders
Will be joyful
While visiting our fish farms,
And eating our fish.

I have no doubt that Mother Earth
Prefers protein for humans from fish
More than from cows and/or pigs.

And I’ve a better chance
To lose my bulging belly’s shameful girth,
On a diet of baked fish
In virgin olive oil and fresh garlic.

So proud!

My Papo’s Sweet Water Organics was written up in the Wall Street Journal this morning. Read all about it.

Happy, happy Friday! A warm-weather weekend is upon us. Yes.

- Check out Amanda! I love this photo of the artist at work and ya know my favorite piece is right behind her… Tomorrow, I’m headed to EastBank Studios to check out her show: Hot Dam Ho Here We Go Again. Bonus points if you leave message in the comments with the song that quote is from…

- If you are part of an engaged couple in the Chicago area, come say hi to me at the Foodie Registry Launch Party on Sunday at Catalyst Ranch. I’ll be there with Kate B. and we’ll have some yummy ricotta cheesecake by Pastry Chef Tony Galzin for you to sample. Check out the video and RSVP info here.

That’s all for me today! Enjoy your weekend!

And happy, happy birthday to Chibueze…

positive friday!

I am in love with this photo from my cousin Kellie’s apartment in Brooklyn.   Vintage adoration must run in my family. The star of the show’s name is Grimble. How cute is he?

Happy, happy, happy Friday!  It’s been a cool, blustery week in Chicago and will rain later, but for now I’m happy with the little sunshine we’re receiving.

- Did you catch my post about turning a thrifted cheese grater into a jewelry organizer over at Inside, Out?  If you’re a  fan of ReadyMade on Facebook, check out the reader comments and pay attention to this gem from Bill:  “It’s neither Crazy nor Cute – it’s stupid and ugly. Sorry.”  Thanks for the input, Bill! Jokes aside, it was a fun post and I’ve got a new repurposing idea up my sleeve for the weekend.

Hint: it involves a new idea based on one of the diy chandeliers I posted about on Wednesday.

-  I’m listening to this on repeat today.

- Found out that Tara is going to be selling GORGEOUS jewelry at the brand new Hester Street Fair in NYC this weekend. The piece I’m coveting is above and only $8. Check out Classy Brass and go visit if you’re in the area. Feel free to pick up that brooch and send it my way.

- For Chicagoans: Diana at Fine Diving let us know about a hotel liquidators sale taking place on Sunday, with three prices only: $5, $10 and $15. A bunch of us are planning to caravan down there and check out the goods. The chairs Diana posted belong in my living room.

- A Facebook status update from my papa made my day this morning: “I would say that 325 of 350 children at Honey Creek School Worm Man Show (along wth food garden installation the kids assisted with) were “transported with joy” at the chance to sift through my black gold and pick up the worms for placement in fresh compost. “I like worms now.” “I loved touching the worms!” “Worms are… adorable!” “Worm mania.” The girls and boys were equal in their transcendent exuberance.”

- My friend Temi forwarded an amazing documentary on Lagos, Nigeria. Beware that if you click these, you won’t be able to do anything else productive for the next hour or so. Part One, Part Two, Part Three and Part Four.

That’s all I got. Have a great weekend!

This weekend, I am looking forward to:

-  checking out the POST Pilsen Market
