Aziza Jones has a pretty market tote over at AphroChic’s auction benefiting the people of Haiti today. Bid high, because she won’t be launching her line until June. This is your chance to own a Sew Earthy by Aziza Jones original for an extremely worthy cause.
For my birthday, Aziza made me the gorgeous make-up/jewelry bag pictured. Her sewing is. . . oh, about a thousand times better than mine. She actually sews in straight lines, so this gives her a big advantage.
Click over to AphroChic to make a bid. All proceeds go directly to Haitian relief.

I collect: vintage Pyrex, Glasbake, mugs, Sheffield china, fabric and pretty notecards.
I want to collect: Cathrineholm pieces.
Kitchenware is my true love and since I have open shelving, I’m always on the lookout for something new to display. The rub? They’re nowhere to be found! Okay, scratch that, they can be found on Etsy and eBay. The real rub? I have never come across one in a thrift store. And I can’t start collecting something that costs more than $5 a piece because my husband will kill me.
I first spotted these beautiful pieces in an Apartment Therapy home tour back in August. Since then, they’ve started popping up everywhere and I. Want. Them.

H is For Home has a really great post on the history of Cathrineholm pieces.
Now you know what to get me for Valentine’s Day this year.

Episode 2 of Big Love’s Season 4 is on tonight and it is nice to get back to Sunday evening HBO programming. I knew Chole Sevigny’s home had been featured in a magazine a few years ago, and in anticipation of tonight’s show, I “put it in the Google.” © Gram

Now-defunct House and Garden featured Sevigny’s apartment in January 2007. I especially love the wallpaper in the hallway. Wonder how much it has changed since then? Someone get her to do another shoot of her house, please!

Since I was fifteen, when the paper version of the NYT was being delivered to my dad’s house, I’ve started Monday mornings with Metropolitan Diary. The paper version has been replaced by the app on my iPhone, but I still wake up looking forward to the city anecdotes at the start of the work week. Reading them leaves me with a warm and fuzzy feeling about urban living and I go about my day on a happier note. An entry from yesterday’s edition got me thinking about gardening; yes, even in twenty degree weather.
The Balcony
Their balcony is nice, but very small.
It overlooks the East River and all
it can hold is two chairs and four plants in pots.
He likes to tend the plants and spends lots
of time out there; often his wife is in the kitchen when
she will call him, and he replies, “I’m in the garden.”
James M. Shea
This is an ideal time to scope out sales and close-outs for container gardening. Do some sketches and see where you can fit some plants on your balcony or the windowsill in your kitchen. Plant stands are super cheap at thrift stores and a lot of outdoor gardening gear at home goods stores is being offered at deep discounts right now. I’m sure they’ll go even lower after Christmas. Thinking about how great you’ll feel sitting on that porch or balcony come June with a cold beer and flowers all around may just get you through the winter.

Who’d a thunk you’d get great design ideas from Extra TV? Paul Abdul (looking rather sober, may I add) took viewers to her cousins new shop, Tweak 99, in Los Angeles on Sunday night’s episode. Billed as a $99 and under store combining value with smart design, Tweak 99 is right on time for the holidays. I love love love the hanging pots, who wants to buy them for me?

Print Society, a brand new website for buying prints, just launched. The new marketplace seems to be working out the kinks and is slow to load but worth it once you get there. Print Society lets you browse prints by price, artist and popularity. The first page of the browse by price section features lovely art available from $4-15. Pair your favorite with a thrifted frame for a thoughtful and affordable holiday gift. Artists and galleries can add their prints to the site as well.

The first thing I ever sewed was with Etsuko Furuya fabric. Later, I chose more of her line for my first chair seat reupholstery job. And finally, I used free scraps of the print above for my first little patch on a pillow for my father-in-law. I started doing some searches online tonight for new fabric and found that she does ceramics, too. If anyone knows where to buy them please let me know! Stunning.

Fabrics available in Chicago at The Needle Shop or their Etsy site.
