My baby brother and his gal came down to Chicago from Milwaukee on Saturday to celebrate his 27th birthday. The rain thwarted our grilling plans, so we munched on stovetop burgers and oven-baked hot and jerk wings. Cupcakes came from Alliance Bakery down the street, and Joey received a Capitalist Pig–my favorite gift to give these days– from me and an heirloom copy of Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations from Papo that our parents used to source their wedding vows from almost thirty years ago. We went around in a circle with the book, each of us closing our eyes and opening to a random page. Joey’s was fitting for the only son and the birthday boy: “Enter upon your inheritance, accept your responsibilities.”

When he was little, Joey would sit at our kitchen table and open the dictionary to random words, copying them into a notebook with their definitions. He would then taunt me around the house: “Spell dysfunctional.” “Use amalgam in a sentence.” “What does termagant mean?” Papo gave him this book with the hopes that he will continue to do the same, only with quotes instead of words this time.

It wasn’t just one occasion that we were celebrating: that evening our father flew to Frankfurt where he stayed one night, and then went on to India (he is probably on a plane as I type this) where he will be a guest of the State Department for three weeks, traveling around the country and giving lectures and talks on aquaponics and urban farming. The protective daughter in me is a terrified but proud, ecstatic but wary, wanting constant contact but recognizing that as he let me move about the world at 17, I have to do the same for him at 65.

NOTE: My Sunday post, in which I (try to) post photos that sum up the week for me, is on a Monday this week and today is Memorial Day. I have all of our service members in my thoughts and prayers today but special recognition goes out to our LGBT members, past and present, of the armed forces. President Obama may have repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, but those changes have not been fully implemented and countless men and women continue to serve in silence. I hope that Memorial Day 2012 brings something different.

Here’s to a safe, happy and fun-filled day of remembrance for all of us! Happy Memorial Day.

Sisters. Dyke March Fundraiser. Chicago, Illinois.

Did you read today’s Op-Ed about boycotting straight weddings? You should. If I had thought about it in the way presented,The Mister and I may have approached things differently.

How utterly absurd to celebrate an institution that I am banned from in most of the country. It puzzles me, truth be told, that wedding invitations deluge me. Does a vegan frequent summer pig roasts? Do devout evangelicals crash couple-swapping parties? Do undocumented immigrants march in Minuteman rallies?

Rich Benjamin, Not Going to the Chapel

Have a great Sunday night.

I call on all gay people to join my boycott of straight weddings this summer, regardless of where their straight loved ones stand. Yes, our boycott may bruise some feelings. But then again, our inability to participate in this institution is hurtful and bruising, too.

Spent today putting the front room back to it’s original state. I knew it wouldn’t last. This involved moving lots and lots of books around. About 150 of them still haven’t found a home. Don’t judge my Jodi Picoult selections. They’re really fun reads.

Today was good.

I…

+ Planted up a storm
+ Chatted with my beautiful grandmother who seemed to be bird watching in a grocery store parking lot at the time
+ Got a call from my baby sister, wishing me a happy big sister’s day
+ Opened a Mother’s Day card from The Mister’s grandad aka Gramps
+ Made some kick-ass pasta
+ Watched GI Jane (it’s a great movie, judge me, I don’t care)
+ Started writing a post on the back porch updates made over the weekend… but just couldn’t do it

My back is spasming from all that gardening exertion (is spasming a word?), it’s getting cold out, I think there is permanent dirt underneath my fingernails and I have only the energy to finish my delicious Great Lakes Eliot Ness while seated comfortably in our little outdoor urban oasis sans computer, cell phone, radio, or light.

Just me, the dog, and city sounds — aaaand cue the siren. Hope you had a great weekend.

Dammit, I missed my Sunday post. Oh well. I’m here now.

The reason I missed it is above. Too much cheese. Okay, it wasn’t the cheese’s fault. I had some gorgeous, beautiful, lovely, amazing lady friends over this Sunday and plain stayed up too late– and you know I paid for it today.

Notice my new stove? It’s magical. Happy Monday.

One photo on a Sunday! Here we have a tense game of spades in eighty degree weather on the back porch, a Ukrainian Village rummage sale towel acting as a table cloth, playing cards from a super nice cashier at Walgreens who said they didn’t sell them but had some free promo sets, Heineken Light for me, something by Sierra Nevada for everyone else.

(Yes, Heineken Light kind of tastes like water, but is better than Amstel Light; Becks Light is better than both, the store was out of it.)

Back to attempting one photo on Sundays to sum up the prior week. This one works well: lace tablecloth, folding chairs, and a beer on a Chicago sidewalk. Spring is slowly meandering this way.

chicago nights: staying in the house

One of the best things about Chicago winters is the dinner gatherings. Sure, we have tons of BBQs and house parties to throw and attend in the spring, summer and fall but there’s something about bundling up and trooping over to a friend’s house in the cold, rushing to get inside after parking and walking into a warm and cozy apartment. On Friday, our graceful co-habiters were the hosts, along with their two French bulldogs , Ziggy and Dozer.

They started us off with Chef Earl’s giardiniera hummus– insanely delicious, if you’re like me and love spiciness.

See all those magnets on the fridge? Kate made them out of bottle caps, clear resin and cut-out images from magazines. Here’s a tutorial on how to make your own. Best part? I got to take a bunch home for my fridge! You might also recognize the pretty bowl on the shelf…

How much do you love this cake tin? The duo picked it up at a flea market on a drive to Kentucky over the summer.

We had mussels.

And homemade chicken fingers.

And fancy frites.

There was also wine and beer.

Oh, and homemade pumpkin cupcakes with butter pecan gelato from Black Dog Gelato on Damen.

There was an interloper at the table during dessert.

Ziggy and Dozer were very well-behaved after they got their sugar fix.

Then Kate pulled out the knitting and it was time to go. Stuffed and sleepy, we made our way home in the cold and burrowed under the covers. Fridays kick ass. Six more days ’til the next one.

sunday

tis the season

Today is Sunday and it is less than one week to Christmas. I’m sure you’re well aware. I love this holiday; the music, the food, the parties, the sweaters, the wrapping paper, picking out prezzies for folks and seeing their eyes light up when they unwrap the last little bit of paper. I’ve had so much fun thrifting for friends and family: a tin tray with red and purple flowers to match her kitchen for Chernara, beer mugs for Chibueze, mini piggy banks for Simone, vintage hankie for Tanisha. I can type all of those out since the gifts have already made it into their hands, but for the rest of my friends who are reading: you will not see your name here! You might see some pieces of your gift, however.

I have not lived up to my all-thrift-everything promise; I got the sewing/fabric/make something itch and have been messing around with little projects here and there and though time consuming, I get a kick out of seeing completed projects. I hope the recipients will, too!

That’s all I can post for now– don’t want to spoil anyone’s Christmas! Hope you’re all having a great weekend and aren’t going to crazy in the shops.

sunday: our new windows

We finally got our new windows installed!

It’s not all good yet, though. While I appreciate their energy savings rating, it’s pretty difficult to tell that they’re new at all because of the half-assed installation job. I had to fight to clean the filthy storm windows before the actual windows went in because the installer was in a hurry and now the wood surrounding the windows is cracked and missing paint.

Apartment living, gotta love it. Someone (read: me) is going to have to repaint the wood and take it out of their rent. Someone else (read: whoever my landlord hires ASAP) is going to have to clean them and all of the other gross windows in our apartment properly.

I’m consoling myself by listening to Tame Impala’s Sundown Syndrome and yU of Diamond District’s Thought About It. I listen to one, go to the other, and then listen to the first one again. There’s a strange little mash-up going on in my brain right now.

Happy Sunday!
